Literature Text

Witch Hammerer! You know a Godly fight,
Like none other has the right!
You will impose on them your spite,
They will tremble 'neath your might.

Witch Hammerer, you are mad with desire
To see us burn in fire
To satisfy your ire -
Your salvation need is dire.

Witch Hammerer, what did Mary teach thee?
Damn womankind for heresy?
Do you think She watches proudly?
Do you think She dost beseech thee?

Witch Hammerer, thinking we fear Hell -
But surely you can tell
By now we know it well
Having lived beneath your shell.

Witch Hammerer, we're going up in flame -
To alleviate our shame?
Have our wicked souls be claimed?
No, to carry up your name!

And you think, most absolutely
Heaven shines upon your duty
And deems it a thing of beauty.
The title is a reference to Heinrich Kramer, the madman who wrote the Malleus Maleficarum in 1486, the single text responsible for the Medieval witch trials and burning of millions of innocent people. He wrote it after being dismissed of his position as a clergyman for trying to conduct a witch trial. Despite the fact his work was condemned by the church and everyone agreed he was off his rocker, it later became the foundation for the condemning of women (and some men) during the witch craze.

Directly speaking, this poem is to him.

Generally speaking, this is a poem directed towards all people who use religion as an excuse to carry out acts of cruelty.
